Bolivia

Should Be on Your Bucket List

August 2025

Hello, hey, and welcome back. It’s a new week and time for a new blog post, and this time I want to talk about something that feels very close to me, why Bolivia should be on your bucket list.

From endless salt flats and exciting jungle rivers to old traditions that are still very much alive today, this country has an incredible way of surprising people!

The only downside? Many people and travelers don’t even know about these beautiful places and often end up skipping Bolivia on their itinerary.

We’ve just finished celebrating Bolivia’s Independence Day, and this year, it’s been even more special than usual. Bolivia just turned 200 years old as an independent country, which is honestly something worth celebrating. And what’s also really cool, without diving too deep into a history lesson, is that La Paz and Bolivia were actually among the very first places in all of South America to rise up and fight for independence from Spanish rule. That moment kind of started everything across South America and it’s still something a lot of Bolivians are really proud of today.

But let’s leave the history there for today and talk about something different, Bolivia as your next travel destination.

Why?

Why is this a country that travelers often don’t know much about but still end up falling for? Why do so many people say, “I didn’t expect Bolivia to be my favorite country on this trip… but it was”? Well, come with me, and I’ll try to explain.

When people plan a trip to South America, most already have a few countries in mind. Usually it’s the big names, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and honestly, it makes sense. You’re traveling far, maybe for the trip of a lifetime, and you want to see and experience as much as possible in the time you have. And while Bolivia has a perfect location if you’re heading from Peru down to Argentina or across to Brazil, it’s often seen as more of a side note, a bonus stop squeezed in between the “main” countries. It’s not always the first destination people book flights for, and it doesn’t always show up at the top of bucket lists. But that often changes once people actually arrive.

And that’s what I want to share with you in this post, the reasons why Bolivia surprises so many travelers, and why I think it absolutely deserves a spot, maybe even a starred one, on your list of places to see in your lifetime.

I also created my own little bucket list, within Bolivia. It’s filled with places I still want to explore, maybe not the most common spots, but the kind of hidden corners I’m aiming for. Want to check it out? You can download it.

And if you want more stories and travel tips, tune in to this week’s podcast,  where I talk all about Bolivia as your next bucket list travel destination.

Landscapes You’ll Never Forget

If there’s one thing Bolivia doesn’t do halfway, it’s the nature. The contrast between places is something that really surprises people. One day you’re out on the Uyuni Salt Flats, the sky turns everything into a huge mirror. The next day you might be hiking a snowy mountain, or walking through the jungle with monkeys jumping around and birds and other animals making all kinds of noise. There are pink lakes, weird rocky valleys, waterfalls, and quiet little towns by the lake. Bolivia doesn’t feel like one country, more like ten squeezed into one. And the best part? A lot of the time, no crowds, it’s just you and the views.

It’s the Perfect Mix of Adventure and Stillness

I think one of the most unique things about Bolivia is that it somehow offers both adrenaline and calmness. It’s the kind of country where you can spend the morning biking down the Death Road, a narrow road once known as the most dangerous in the world, and then spend the afternoon lying in a hammock, surrounded by jungle sounds and warm air. Whether you’re trekking through the Andes, hiking through old Inca trails, floating down Amazonian rivers, bathing in thermal springs, or watching the sun set over Lake Titicaca, Bolivia gives you the choice. There’s so much to do for travelers looking for adventure, but also countless places where you can pause, breathe, and just take in the moment.

Rich Cultures and Living Traditions

What I love about Bolivia, and what a lot of travelers end up loving too, is how the culture is everywhere, no matter where you go. It’s not something you need to look for, it’s right there, part of everyday life. From the highlands to the valleys, the salt flats to the jungle, you’ll find Aymara, Quechua, Guaraní, and other Indigenous traditions still going strong. You might hear traditional instruments in a plaza in La Paz, see traditional dancers on a dusty road near Potosí, or come across a ritual happening on a mountaintop or deep in the forest. In the markets, people buy herbs, charms, and offerings to Pachamama. You’ll be offered coca leaf tea, soup cooked with hot stones, or maybe a homemade drink made from corn, fruit, or even peanuts, and probably a good story to go with it. Even if you don’t always understand what’s happening, you can feel that these traditions are alive, proud, and deeply woven into the rhythm of life across the whole country.

Your Money Goes Far

Let’s be honest, travel can be expensive, especially when you're trying to cover a lot of ground. But Bolivia is one of those countries where your budget stretches surprisingly far, without feeling like you’re cutting corners. Especially right now. You can have a good meal for just a few dollars, stay in cozy guesthouses or even boutique hotels without breaking your budget, and explore some of the most stunning landscapes on the continent without needing to book expensive tours. Bus rides that cover huge distances often cost less than a single meal in other countries, and many of the best experiences, from hiking to attending local festivals, are completely free or very affordable. Even iconic tours, like the three-day Salt Flats adventure or jungle trips in Rurrenabaque, are way more accessible price-wise compared to similar trips in other parts of South America. Bolivia lets you travel deeper, stay longer, and do more, all without having to constantly check your wallet.

You’ll Leave With Stories (and Maybe a Bit of Dust on Your Shoes)

Bolivia isn’t always easy. Things don’t always go as planned. But that’s where the magic often happens. This country gives you stories, the kind you’ll tell for years after your trip. Maybe it’s the time you shared soup with strangers on a night bus. Maybe it’s when you ended up in a small town during a local festival you didn’t even know existed, and suddenly you were dancing in the street. Maybe it’s the feeling of standing alone in a massive, open landscape, thinking, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” Bolivia surprises you, challenges you, and gives you moments that don’t always make it into guidebooks — but definitely stay in your memory. It’s not a polished place, and it doesn’t pretend to be. And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Ready to Explore It Yourself & The Inspiration Station

So there you have it,  just a few of the many reasons why I think Bolivia absolutely deserves a spot on your bucket list. It might not be the country you knew the most about before coming to South America, and it might not even be the one you were most excited for at first. But for many travelers, it ends up being the place they think about the most once they leave. It’s wild and calm, beautiful and unpredictable, full of contrast and full of heart.
