Get Lost (and Find Treasures) in the Markets of La Paz
May 2025
Hey travelers, Hope you’re all doing great and enjoying your adventures, wherever they may be!
Today, I felt like talking about one of my favorite small adventures when traveling, visiting local markets.
It’s such a beautiful way to get to know a place better, feel its real vibe, and meet the local people, not just here in Bolivia, but all across South America and honestly, all over the world!
In today’s blog post, we’re diving into the colorful markets in and around La Paz, what you can expect, what treasures you might find, and a few little tips to help you get the most out of the experience.
If you want more travel and market stories, don’t miss our podcast! 🎧
But before we jump into that, I just wanted to take a moment to share a small update from Café del Mundo. ☕
These past weeks, we’ve been going through a bit of a high season here, maybe the first real one since the pandemic, and even though we weren’t fully prepared for it, we have been working really hard to keep everything on top, just like always.
I know the waiting times have sometimes been a bit longer (and maybe even a little confusing with new team members learning the ropes), and I truly, truly appreciate your patience and understanding through it all. A huge thank you to all you amazing travelers and visitors, your smiles, kindness, and good vibes have made all the difference. 💛
The good news? Things are now settling back to normal, with quicker service, shorter waits, and a smoother vibe all around.
We’re so grateful to have you here and to share this journey with you!
Markets Are Part of Daily Life
OK, so back to the markets of La Paz.
Markets are a big part of daily life in La Paz, they’re not just for souvenirs or tourists, but where local people go to buy their food, clothes, and almost everything else.
Even though you can find big supermarkets in the city today, they arrived pretty late and are still not the first choice for most locals. Most people still prefer to do their daily grocery shopping at the markets, where the produce is fresher, cheaper, and the connection with the seller is part of the experience.
Visiting the markets is one of the best ways to feel the real life in La Paz.
Types of Markets You’ll Find
In La Paz, you’ll find all kinds of markets, each with its own special charm:
Traditional food markets packed with fresh fruits, vegetables, street food, and colorful spices.
The famous Witches' Market, where you’ll find potions, amulets, and a little bit of magic around every corner.
Clothing and artisan markets, full of alpaca products, souvenirs, and handmade crafts.
Hidden local markets, the kind where you can get lost in endless labyrinths of stalls, sit down on a small plastic chair for an afternoon tea, and around every corner, find everything you can imagine… except maybe your way out.
My Love-Hate Story with La Paz Markets
I have this kind of love-hate relationship with the markets in La Paz.
As a traveler arriving here for the first time, I absolutely loved them, getting lost, exploring, discovering new smells, colors, and people. But as someone just starting out and trying to build a business, looking for specific things to decorate or stock a kitchen, I was going nuts.
The markets are huge, like real labyrinths and it took me years to find the right places, the right stalls, and the right people. I even once ordered furniture and... well, I never found my way back to the little store. Goodbye chairs! And to be fair, the chairman never picked up the phone either, so the chairs were probably not even made ;)
